The Taupo Fishery section of the Department of Conservation is based in Turangi, trout fishing world capital, and it is strongly engaged in trout fishing commitment. Our mission is to keep trout fishing at the top of New Zealand’s attractions, providing some of the highest standards for recreational trout fishing in the world.

In coordination with the Tongariro National Trout Centre, rangers and educational programmes, my main responsibilities in DOC include:

– native and non-native fish population monitoring (traps, electro-fishing, PIT tagging);

– VAKI riverwatcher setup and monitoring;

– lake-river status monitoring: echo-sounding, drone surveys, electro-fishing, PIT tagging;

– compliance law enforcement;

– vessels portfolio and operations;

– drift diving operations;

– scientific divulgation.
